USABO for International Students: The China-Region Pathway (2026)

A common question from international students is whether they can take the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) at all. The answer is yes: USABO runs a China region, so students based in China can sit the exam and earn China-region recognition — a credential that carries real weight on a university application. What international students generally do not do is progress to the US national team and the International Biology Olympiad, which follows a separate, US-based selection path. This page sets out who can take part and how the recognition works; for the exact registration channel and eligibility, always confirm on our China-region page and the official USABO channels.

Who can take part

It helps to separate two different things that the word “USABO” can mean:

Two separate paths: international students sit the China-region exam for China-region recognition; the US national team and IBO is a separate US-based route
International students take part through the China-region exam and earn China-region recognition. The US national-team / IBO route is a separate, US-based path.
  • The China-region exam — open to international students. Students in China sit the USABO exam through the China region and are recognised against China-region standards. This is the route the great majority of our students take.
  • The US national team — a separate path. Selection for Team USA and the International Biology Olympiad runs through the US-based rounds and is not the route international students follow. Treat these as two different goals.

Because eligibility details can change year to year, confirm the current rules on the official channels before you register — we keep the practical, China-specific details on the China-region page.

How China-region recognition works

China-region results are awarded by percentile, so your standing is measured against the field rather than a fixed cut-off:

USABO China-region recognition by percentile: Gold roughly top 10 percent, Silver top 25 percent, Bronze top 35 percent
China-region recognition is percentile-based. Confirm the current bands on the official channels.
Award China-region standard
Gold Roughly the top 10%
Silver Roughly the top 25%
Bronze Roughly the top 35%

Percentile awards reward consistent, accurate work across the whole syllabus rather than one strong topic. The most reliable way to land in the top bands is to work through real past papers under time — see our USABO past-papers hub.

What it signals on an application

For students aiming at biology, pre-med or life-sciences programmes, a USABO China-region award is a clear, externally-verified signal of subject depth — it shows you can perform on a college-level biology exam against a competitive field. It pairs naturally with the British Biology Olympiad (BBO), which sits in January and shares roughly 90% of USABO's content, so many international students target both in a single preparation cycle to build a stronger profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students take the USABO?
Yes — through the China region. Students based in China sit the exam and earn China-region recognition. Confirm the current registration channel and eligibility on the official channels and our China-region page.

Can an international student join Team USA or go to the IBO through USABO?
No. Team USA selection and the International Biology Olympiad follow a separate, US-based path. International students take part for China-region recognition, which is a distinct (and worthwhile) goal.

How are China-region awards decided?
By percentile — roughly Gold for the top 10%, Silver for the top 25% and Bronze for the top 35%. Bands can change year to year, so confirm the current standards officially.

Should I also do the BBO?
Many international students do. The BBO is open to high-school students, sits in January, and shares about 90% of USABO's content, so one prep cycle can target both.
