Historical USABO Score Cutoffs

2025 USABO

• From 2025, a Top Gold Award was introduced, and the ratios for Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards were adjusted.

Overall, the 2025 USABO exam was slightly easier than in 2024. While few points were “easy giveaways,” success required a solid understanding of cells, plant and animal physiology, biochemistry, and evolution. Mastery of Campbell Biology typically allows students to secure most points.

• Gold Award: 25 points

• Silver Award: 20 points

• Bronze Award: 18 points

Compared to 2023, the scores required for awards decreased. The exam was stable in format and difficulty, with concise question stems and a moderate number of graph-based questions. Simple questions contributed approximately 10 points, while medium-level questions contributed around 20 points. Mastery of medium-level questions was key to winning awards. 2023 USABO

The 2023 USABO Open Exam attracted 3,305 participants. Most students scored 20 points, with an average score of 21 and a maximum of 42. The Bronze Award cutoff was 24 points.

However, the 2023 China Division award scores were significantly higher than global averages, and some irregularities were observed in top scores. Therefore, these results should be interpreted with caution, and historical data should be referenced for comparison.

2022 USABO

• The 2022 Open Exam had 3,816 participants, with most scoring 12–17 points. The Bronze Award cutoff was 18 points, meaning many students narrowly missed awards by a few points. Competitors must have a firm grasp of core knowledge to succeed.

2018–2022 Score Trends

• From 2018 to 2022, the number of participants slightly decreased. Most students scored between 14–16 points. Generally, only scores above the average had a chance to earn awards.

USABO Competition Overview

The USABO China Division (also known as BIO-USACN) is organized by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a non-profit academic organization founded in 1983. CEE selects and trains the U.S. national biology team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
