USABO Exam Content Distribution
- 25% Animal Anatomy and Physiology
- 20% Cell Biology
- 20% Genetics and Evolution
- 15% Plant Anatomy and Physiology
- 10% Ecology
- 5% Ethology (Animal Behavior)
- 5% Biological Systematics
Beginning with the 2026 cycle, two new topic areas were added: Neuroscience and Bioinformatics. Students preparing for 2027 should ensure these modules are included in their study plans.
Why USABO Matters for University Admissions
USABO is organized by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and serves as the official selection process for the U.S. team at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). It attracts approximately 10,000 high school students per year and is widely recognized by leading universities in the United States, United Kingdom, and beyond.
Strong USABO performance is particularly valuable for students applying to programs in:
- Biology and Molecular Biology
- Pre-Med and Medicine
- Biomedical Sciences
- Neuroscience
- Life Sciences and Biochemistry
How to Prepare for USABO
Effective USABO preparation requires systematic study across all tested modules. Recommended steps include:
- Build a complete knowledge framework using a textbook such as Campbell Biology
- Expand into advanced topics with Molecular Biology of the Cell (Alberts) and Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry
- Practice with past USABO exam papers under timed conditions
- Identify and address weak areas module by module
- Focus on understanding mechanisms and experimental logic, not memorization alone
