Animal behavior and taxonomy sit at the bottom of the USABO content weights — 5% each — so most students quietly skip them to spend more time on physiology and genetics. That is a mistake. Together these two domains are 10% of the Open Exam, and they are the fastest, most recall-friendly marks on the whole paper. Why 10% Is Worth More Than It Looks

On a 50-question, 50-minute Open Exam run by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a 5% domain is roughly a handful of questions, and two of them together approach one question in ten. The behavior trap — read the verb, not the label. Many wrong answers come from blurring look-alike terms. Kinesis is an undirected change in the rate of movement in response to a stimulus; taxis is directed movement toward or away from one. In the same way, not every learned behavior is “conditioning” — habituation, imprinting and insight are distinct processes. The stem almost always tells you which is meant, so read the verb describing what the animal actually does before you look at the options.

The taxonomy trap — proximity is not relationship. A cladogram can be drawn many different ways for exactly the same relationships, because the branches at any node rotate freely without changing meaning. Students who read “closer together on the page” as “more closely related” walk straight into a classic distractor.
